Category: Photo A Day
1/23/17 – Night
It seems like just the past few days I’ve finally been able to stay up past 8PM. I love the way a city changes at night. Going home from a friends house after dinner tonight; the air was much cooler and the streets less chaotic; the city was at peace.
1/22/17 – One Pot Meal
When you only have one burner, every meal is a one pot meal. Tonight I made spinach and ham marinara; the most ambitious meal yet.
1/21/17 – Tuktuk
The tuktuk has become my main means of transportation. Paying anywhere from $2-$8, these open-air taxis are prolific throughout the city and provide a good opportunity for a passing photo or two.
1/20/17 – Exploring
The Preah Thineang Chan Chhaya “Moonlight Pavilion” is an open air pavilion in the Royal Palace complex, as Wikipedia tells me. It serves as a stage for Khmer classical dance and a platform for viewing parades marching past the grounds. We missed the morning tour of the palace and will have to come back another…
1/19/17 – Haggle
Still getting used to bartering for things. It’s both an art and a science. Sometimes I know they are more than doubling the price for the ex-pat mark up, but other times I feel bad bargaining at all when the opening price is already lower than expected. And sometimes I just want conveyor belt and…
1/18/17 – Utilities
We had our internet installed today – set up, modem, router… not so much – and here is just part of the process. Tuktuk pulls up with a bunch of spools, three guys hop out (thankfully one of them speaks English), and set-up begins. We’ll just add a new line down to the end of the…
1/17/17 – To the Market
Phnom Penh has many markets, each with its own flavor. Here’s a glimpse of the Russian market. Though Cambodia has more western style stores, you could call this the Khmer Walmart. Here I could pick up anything from dried fruit to auto parts to some new cloths.
1/16/17 – Around Town
Getting to know the city has been fun. I’ve been choosing to walk most places to get to know the streets better, but a tuktuk is never far away. There’s not a lot of pedestrians here though; I see a motor bike in my future soon!
The Little Things
Sometimes it takes baby steps. Today’s Goals: 1.) Get internet at the house 2.) Learn Japanese so I can do my laundry
St. 364
I’ve had a lot of different addresses over the last few years, but only a few homes. From rural New Zealand, to the suburbs of Colorado, to this: a dirt road somewhere in the middle of the 1.5 million metropolis of Phnom Penh. As the days go by and landmarks and faces become more familiar, I’m waiting…
